How to Participate in the Heritage Shorthorn Certified Beef (HSCB) Program

(Participation in this program is free for members of the Heritage Shorthorn Society)

1. Become a member of the Heritage Shorthorn Society (HSS). The initial fee for the first 12 months of membership in HSS is $40.00, and then renewal is just $30.00/12 months.

Visit the Heritage Shorthorn Society website (via the link below) for more information about raising Heritage Shorthorn cattle &/or joining HSS.

2. Raise steers that are out of registered Shorthorn cattle and that are in addition at least 25% Heritage Shorthorn by pedigree. Alternatively steers will also qualify if they are at least 75% Shorthorn by breed, and additionally have at least 1 parent or grandparent which is a registered Heritage Shorthorn by pedigree).
All steers marketed under this program also have to have a traditional Shorthorn coat color/pattern, i.e.—red, white, or roan. Steers which are black, blue roan, Hereford coat pattern, or “belted”, etc. will not qualify.

(This program does not prevent you from raising & marketing other types of steers, as long as they are not promoted or sold under the HSCB label.)

3. Follow the general HSCB guidelines in raising your cattle—basically this involves raising them in a farm or ranch setting, without using growth promoting hormones or implants.

4. Once you are a member of HSS, contact the HSS office to have your name and Farm/Ranch information added to the HSCB website. You will also be given the password to access the marketing & promotional ideas and materials found on the HSS Member Page.
